Thirty-five thousand miles, twenty cities, nine countries, and four continents traveled. My name is Cindy and together with my husband, Ernie, we’re the winners of The Amazing Race, Season 19. The Amazing Race is a reality-TV show where eleven teams compete in a race around the world. The teams, each composed of two participants with a preexisting relationship, travel to various locations in the world, engage in a series of mental and physical challenges known as Detours and Roadblocks, and attempt to be the first team to complete the route and arrive at the finish line.

What does this have to do with Mars One and its mission to Mars? Having completed the most extreme race around the globe, Ernie and I learned a thing or two about the importance of working together as one team to conquer the unknown. And after being filmed day and night for more than three weeks, we also know a little something about what it’s like to do those things with millions of people watching.

The astronauts vying to fly to Mars won’t just have to worry about the challenges awaiting them during colonization. First, they will face rigorous training—their own mental and physical challenges—to prove themselves capable of the mission. This whole process will be caught on film.
